How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays an important role as your furnace prepares to warm your home.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and creates heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t functioning the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will show you something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may notice quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
