Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that provides financial support to men and women in the construction industry who have life-altering injuries. Each year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a major stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the stroke left his left leg severely impaired, causing foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors were concerned that he would most likely become confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, putting financial stress on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help people with foot drop walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be required so he could learn how to use it.

Luckily, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
